Last night, three serious adults
danced to pop songs in my living room.
Down half a bottle of James,
throats tingly, senses awakened,
we agreed on three truths among us:
existence on Earth is much too fleeting,
our spirits are much too free and
our bodies that hold them much too curious.
And on the back porch, we announced these truths
to the January air and the nocturnals inhabiting,
Like Old Dickey, in his Strength of Fields plea,
we each sighed, “Lord, let me shake with purpose.”
And what began shortly thereafter
in the soft carpeted listening room,
as shy shoulder sways and toe taps,
evolved rapidly into a mad dancing trinity;
a twirling, twisting outright pissed promenade!
Both united and unique in our movements,
we each performed in this rite for an audience of merely
one another, and three insects who’d heard the ruckus,
accepting the most ridiculous twitch and rattle
as a divine work of art, from the Lord herself.
Then back out to the cold for us, once our work was done.
All our time has led to this, I’ll complain until I’ve lost my voice
Now the train has moved along (and I, as if I’ve had a choice)
Ever want to find me I’ll be lying in the ground
My address is easy; it’s the dirt
Well if this is what you choose the dollar has another sign
[a ticket to ride on a vessel of love will cost you more than average market price]
And you’re fine with all you’ll lose? I’ve got it now; I bit my pride
[as the wheels go up, what you could change only affects what you will become]
I’ll be six feet under in four solid walls of sound
Keeping your space clean for what it's worth
You’d make me slave to your demise
And if you could hide it would you try?
But I’m lost to your intention, holy one
